Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm)

Compact direct drive base with the Boost Kit 180 included for the full 8 Nm, plus QR2 Lite

Description

The Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm) is the CSL DD direct drive base packaged with the Boost Kit 180, a 180 W power supply that unlocks the motor's full 8 Nm peak torque. Fanatec says this mode gives much stronger feedback and makes subtle cues easier to feel, and the torque can be sustained without active cooling.

Motor. A 100% custom motor developed in Germany for sim racing, with patented FluxBarrier technology and a carbon fiber composite shaft for low rotational mass and quick response. The aluminum housing acts as the structural chassis and passive heat sink, so the base is fanless. It uses the same contactless Hall-position sensor as the Podium series, with rotation adjustable up to 2520 degrees.

FullForce. FullForce high-frequency detail effects were added via firmware in June 2026 (V1.5.1.2 or later), in supported games.

Quick release. The preinstalled QR2 Lite Base-Side (Type-C) works with QR2 Lite, regular and Pro wheel-sides and, per Fanatec, causes no torque restriction even with the Boost Kit 180.

Mounting and ports. T-nut rails on the sides and bottom, with optional table clamps (5-60 mm) sold separately. Ports: power, USB-C, Fanatec DataPort-C, Shifter 1, Shifter 2 (sequential), Pedal and Handbrake. Works on Windows PC with Fanatec wheels and on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S with an Xbox-licensed Fanatec wheel. Not compatible with PlayStation.

Driving style

The CSL DD (8 Nm) is for PC and Xbox racers who want the CSL DD's full strength from day one. Traxion found the jump from 5 to 8 Nm gives more weight and makes it easier to tell when the car is sliding, especially in high-downforce cars, while top pace stayed similar; at full force it was too strong for some rally stages and needed lower settings in rFactor 2. It suits GT, formula and endurance sim racing on a desk or cockpit for aspiring competitive drivers. PlayStation players should choose the Gran Turismo DD Pro instead.

Build quality

Mid-range build

The CSL DD's aluminum housing doubles as structural chassis and passive heat sink, with composite end caps and no fan, and the custom motor uses a carbon fiber composite shaft. The preinstalled QR2 Lite Base-Side is carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide. BoxThisLap, which tested this 8 Nm configuration, found it compact, solid and very quiet, and noted the Boost Kit power supply arrives in a separate box. Fanatec covers it with a three-year warranty.

Software

The CSL DD is managed with the Windows-only Fanatec App, which delivered the June 2026 firmware (V1.5.1.2 or later) that added FullForce and a September 2026 hotfix for stability issues. On the wheel, a Standard Tuning Menu keeps setup simple while the Advanced Tuning Menu lets enthusiasts fine-tune force feedback, which BoxThisLap recommends adjusting per car while watching for clipping. Some titles need Compatibility Mode to enable wheel LEDs.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CSL DD (8 Nm) work on PlayStation or Xbox?

Fanatec states the CSL DD is not compatible with any PlayStation console and cannot be upgraded. It works on Windows PC with a Fanatec steering wheel and on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S with any Xbox-licensed Fanatec wheel. The PlayStation-licensed 8 Nm equivalent is the Gran Turismo DD Pro.

How much difference does 8 Nm make over 5 Nm?

Traxion found top lap pace essentially the same, but 8 Nm gave more weight and clearer feedback at the grip limit, making slides easier to catch, with small lap-time gains in some sims. It also found full force too strong on fast DiRT Rally 2.0 stages and preferred lowering force in rFactor 2. BoxThisLap estimates about 60% more strength than 5 Nm.

Does the QR2 Lite quick release limit torque with the Boost Kit?

No. Fanatec states the QR2 Lite Base-Side (Type-C) works with all QR2 wheel-sides (Lite, regular and Pro) and causes no torque restriction, even with the Boost Kit 180. Note that some wheels, such as the CSL P1 V2 and CSL BMW, limit torque on their own regardless of the base.

Are there known issues with the CSL DD?

BoxThisLap advises securing the quick release firmly, as a loose connection can cut buttons and force feedback, and notes some H-pattern shifters needed reconfiguring to be detected. In September 2026, Fanatec App V1.5.4.1 delivered a firmware hotfix for CSL DD and GT DD Pro stability issues, including oscillations after exiting menus in some titles.

CSL DD (8 Nm) or ClubSport DD?

The CSL DD (8 Nm) costs $479.99 on Fanatec US and offers 8 Nm peak in a compact, fanless body. The ClubSport DD costs $699.99 and delivers 15 Nm holding torque after its 2026 firmware update, with a heavier metal body and an integrated QR2 shaft; both work on PC and Xbox but not PlayStation. Traxion notes 8 Nm is still modest next to Fanatec's higher-end bases.

Is the 8 Nm bundle better value than adding the Boost Kit later?

On Fanatec US the 8 Nm package costs $479.99 versus $399.99 for the 5 Nm base, an $80 difference that includes the Boost Kit 180. BoxThisLap notes bundling saves only a little over buying separately, and Traxion considers the extra torque worthwhile mainly for competitive drivers.

What warranty does Fanatec offer on the CSL DD?

Since June 3, 2025, Fanatec offers a three-year limited warranty on Fanatec-branded products bought from Fanatec or authorized retailers, plus a 30-day return window. Fanatec warns that only the standard 90 W supply or the Boost Kit 180 may be used; any other power supply voids the warranty and can be dangerous.

Does the CSL DD support FullForce, and how should I tune it?

Yes, FullForce was added in a June 2026 firmware update (V1.5.1.2 or later) via the Fanatec App, and it depends on game support. BoxThisLap recommends starting from Fanatec's suggested settings, tuning per car while watching the clipping meter, and using Compatibility Mode where needed.
