Fanatec ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module

Magnetic shift paddle upgrade with 3 mm carbon plates for ClubSport wheels and hubs

Description

The Fanatec ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module (Carbon) replaces the standard sprung micro-switch shifters on compatible Fanatec wheels and hubs with a magnetic mechanism modeled on race car paddles.

Mechanism. Strong magnets replace steel springs, giving a firm, positive click on every shift. The automotive-grade switches are tested for one million cycles, and padded shifter arms reduce metal-on-metal noise.

Build. Each module uses a CNC-machined aluminum cage and real carbon fiber paddle plates, 3 mm thick with 16-17 layers. Two plate sets are included: Formula-style for small wheels and GT-style for large wheels, plus spacers to adjust plate position for different rim diameters and distances.

Compatibility. Fanatec lists the ClubSport Steering Wheel Formula V2, V2.5 and V2.5 X, the ClubSport F1 wheels (including F1 PS4 versions), F1 Esports V2, BMW GT2 V2, RS, the ClubSport Universal Hub for Xbox One, the Universal Hub V2 and V2 for Xbox, and the Podium Hub. It is not compatible with the Formula Black/Carbon, original F1 Esports, BMW M3 GT2, Porsche 918 RSR, the first Universal Hub, or CSL P1 and McLaren GT3 wheels. It uses the same 6-pin connector as the Podium Advanced Paddle Module, and should not be used together with ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles.

Driving style

The ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module is a shifting upgrade for formula and GT drivers. Its firm magnetic click helps with fast, precise up- and downshifts in F1 25, iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Le Mans Ultimate and Gran Turismo 7, where every shift is felt through the rim. Formula plates suit smaller F1-style wheels, while the GT plates fit round wheels like the ClubSport RS.

It fits owners of older ClubSport Formula wheels, the Universal Hub for Xbox One or the Podium Hub who want a better shift feel without buying a new wheel. Best for formula and GT racers on compatible ClubSport or Podium hardware; less suited for drivers who need clutch paddles for launches or analog handbrake (the Podium Advanced Paddle Module covers that), and for rally or drift drivers who may prefer fixed static paddles.

Build quality

Premium build

The module combines a CNC-machined aluminum cage, real carbon fiber paddle plates 3 mm thick and automotive-grade switches tested for one million cycles. Reviewers describe the paddles as heavier, more solid and higher quality than the micro-switch shifters they replace. Padded arms keep noise down, though some drivers find the rubber dampers dull the click slightly.

Software

The ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module needs no software of its own. It plugs into the wheel or hub's 6-pin paddle connectors and works through the Fanatec wheel base, so the latest base and wheel firmware should be installed via the Fanatec App or driver package on a Windows PC; one GTPlanet user fixed paddles not being recognized simply by updating firmware.

On console it follows the wheel it is installed on: Xbox with an Xbox hub such as the Universal Hub V2 for Xbox, and PlayStation with a PlayStation-licensed setup. On PC the paddles appear as standard buttons that can be mapped in any sim.

Frequently asked questions

Which wheels and hubs is the ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module compatible with?

Fanatec lists the ClubSport Formula V2, V2.5 and V2.5 X, ClubSport F1 wheels (including F1 PS4 versions), F1 Esports V2, BMW GT2 V2, RS, the Universal Hub for Xbox One, Universal Hub V2 and V2 for Xbox, and the Podium Hub.

Which Fanatec wheels does it not fit?

It is not compatible with the ClubSport Formula Black/Carbon and original F1 Esports, BMW M3 GT2, Porsche 918 RSR, the first ClubSport Universal Hub, CSL P1 wheels for Xbox One and PS4, or the CSL Elite McLaren GT3.

How difficult is installation?

It is a bolt-on job using the included 4 mm and 2 mm Allen keys: open the wheel or hub, unplug and unbolt the old shifters, then mount the new modules and plug them into the shift connectors. One reviewer called it easy with patience but noted the original bolts can be very tight and some hubs need a 3 mm key.

How does the shift feel compare with the standard paddles?

Reviewers and users describe the magnetic paddles as smoother, heavier and more positive than the original sprung micro-switch shifters, with a satisfying click and less noise. Some drivers wanting a crisper click find the rubber dampers soften it; removing them is not straightforward and may void the warranty.

How durable are the magnetic paddles?

Fanatec states the automotive-grade switches are tested for one million cycles, and the magnetic mechanism has no steel springs to fatigue. User reports in the reviewed threads do not mention wear or loosening problems.

What if the paddles are not recognized after installation?

Update the wheel base and steering wheel firmware first. A GTPlanet user whose paddles were not detected on a Universal Hub for Xbox One on PS4 fixed it with the latest firmware after re-seating the 6-pin connectors did not help. If it persists, contact Fanatec support.

Does it need any software?

No. It has no software or firmware of its own and works through the wheel and base. Keep base and wheel firmware current with the Fanatec App or driver package on a Windows PC; the paddles then act as standard shift buttons in any sim.

ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module or Podium Advanced Paddle Module?

The ClubSport module gives magnetic shift paddles only. The Podium Advanced Paddle Module adds dual Hall-sensor analog clutch paddles and extra buttons for launches or a handbrake, at a much higher price. Both use the same 6-pin connector; one GTPlanet user moved to the ClubSport module because the extra paddles were not useful in GT Sport.

Static shifter paddles or the Magnetic Paddle Module?

Fanatec positions static shifter paddles, which stay fixed behind the wheel, for rally and drifting, and the magnetic module, which rotates with the wheel, for formula and GT racing. They should not be installed at the same time to avoid collisions.

Is it worth the price?

It costs $79.99 at Fanatec US and €109.95 in Europe. Reviewers and users generally consider it worth it for the improved feel and quieter operation, though it changes the feel of shifting rather than adding new functions.
