MOZA R9 V3

9 Nm direct drive base with 21-bit encoder and 280 MHz processor

Description

The MOZA R9 V3 is a direct drive wheel base rated at 9 N·m of peak torque and 180 W peak power. The V3 revision, announced in April 2025, adds a 21-bit magnetic encoder and MOZA's NexGen 4.0 force feedback algorithm. It sits between the R5 and the R12 V2 in MOZA's range.

Motor and electronics. A high-performance servo motor in an 18-slot / 16-pole configuration, a 21-bit magnetic encoder (2,097,152 steps per revolution, 0.00017°), a 280 MHz processor running NexGen 4.0 with Enhanced Dynamic Feedback, a 1000 Hz USB refresh rate and 90-2700° adjustable rotation. An industrial conductive slip ring is rated for over 5 million revolutions.

Design and mounting. Aviation-grade aluminum alloy housing, 240 × 157 × 124 mm, with intelligent temperature monitoring and active cooling. It uses a standard 4-hole bottom mount, with optional table clamp and side mounting.

Ecosystem. Ports for MOZA pedals, dashboards, shifters, handbrakes and an optional E-stop, plus a status indicator light. Settings are tuned in MOZA Pit House or the mobile app, and firmware updates are delivered online.

Compatibility. MOZA lists Windows PC as the platform. Xbox play is possible with the MOZA ESX steering wheel; PlayStation is not supported. A steering wheel is not included.

Driving style

The R9 V3 is a step up into direct drive for racers coming from gear or belt wheels, or from MOZA's own R3 and R5. Its 9 N·m peak torque delivers clear bumps, curb and weight-transfer detail in the F1 series, Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, iRacing, Project CARS and Wreckfest, and it pairs well with smaller formula and GT rims. Larger rims for drifting or trucks will feel the torque ceiling sooner. Best for budget-minded PC racers who want real direct drive on a desk clamp or a light rig; less suited for heavy GT or endurance setups where the R12 V2 or Ultra bases give more headroom.

Build quality

Mid-range build

The R9 V3 uses an aviation-grade aluminum alloy housing (240 × 157 × 124 mm) around an 18-slot / 16-pole servo motor and a 21-bit magnetic encoder. Unlike the passively cooled Ultra bases, it combines intelligent temperature monitoring with active cooling, and reviewers report it stays cool over several hours. An industrial conductive slip ring is rated for over 5 million revolutions. MOZA lists up to 24 months of warranty.

Software

The R9 V3 is configured in MOZA Pit House on Windows PC: force feedback strength, rotation, damping, friction and inertia, game presets and online firmware updates. The MOZA mobile app lets you swap presets and tweak settings mid-game, which reviewers found handy. It runs NexGen 4.0 FFB and is recognized quickly by titles such as F1 25. On Xbox it works when paired with the MOZA ESX steering wheel; PlayStation is not supported. SimHub and Crew Chief run alongside on PC.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MOZA R9 V3 work on Xbox or PlayStation?

MOZA lists PC as the official platform. Xbox play is possible when the base is paired with the MOZA ESX steering wheel. Forum users note MOZA gear does not run natively on PS4/PS5.

What is new in the R9 V3?

MOZA's April 2025 update gave the R9 V3 a 21-bit magnetic encoder (about 2.09 million positions per turn) and NexGen 4.0 FFB. The current spec also lists a 280 MHz processor and active cooling.

How does the R9 V3 feel compared with a gear or belt wheel?

Reviewers describe the 9 Nm direct drive as detailed and smooth, with bumps and weight transfer clearly felt, especially using the F1 preset. Forum users recommend the R9 over the R5 when running larger formula or GT rims because of the extra torque.

MOZA R9 V3 vs R12 V2?

Both share the 21-bit encoder, iRacing 360 Hz support and Pit House. The R12 V2 adds 3 Nm for about $100 more and is the common recommendation for most buyers; the R9 V3 suits those who want direct drive detail without the strongest forces and at a lower price.

Can I use the R9 V3 on a desk?

Yes, with MOZA's optional table clamp. A reviewer using a desk clamp found the force feedback strong enough to shake the desk and wanted a proper wheel stand afterwards, so a sturdy desk or a rig is recommended.

Does the R9 V3 get hot?

MOZA lists intelligent temperature monitoring with active cooling, and a reviewer reported the aluminum body stayed cool after a few hours of use.

Is Pit House hard to use with the R9 V3?

Forum users say the number of options can feel overwhelming coming from other brands, but the built-in presets help, and the mobile app makes mid-session changes easy. Some found it not immediately obvious where to update firmware.

Is the R9 V3 good value?

MOZA's US store lists it at $299 on sale (regular $349), about $100 below the R12 V2. Reviewers rate the experience highly for the price; a rim and quick release are extra.

What warranty does the R9 V3 have?

MOZA's US store lists up to 24 months of warranty protection and a 14-day returns policy. The store page currently notes shipping within 15 business days.
