MOZA R21 Ultra

21 Nm sustained direct drive base with zero-cogging flat-wire motor

Description

The MOZA R21 Ultra is a direct drive wheel base rated at 21 N·m of sustained torque (not a short peak figure). Unveiled at Gamescom in August 2025, it replaces the R21 V2 and sits between the R16 Ultra and the flagship R25 Ultra.

Motor and electronics. A next-generation zero-cogging flat-wire motor, a 21-bit magnetic encoder (2,097,152 PPR), on-device force feedback processing, a 1000 Hz USB refresh rate and iRacing 360 Hz mode support.

Design and mounting. CNC-machined aluminum alloy housing and coupler with a plastic rear cover, 248.8 × 140 × 135 mm and 9.0 kg, far smaller than the original R21 and close to the R12 in size. Front, side and bottom mounting are supported (adjustable bracket optional). Power comes from a 360 W adapter (110–220 V AC to 36 V DC).

Lighting, ecosystem and safety. Two RGB strips (16.7 million colors) can show ABS, traction control, gear shift and flag telemetry. Dedicated ports connect MOZA pedals, shifters, handbrakes, dashboards and an optional emergency stop. Hands-Off Protection centers and stabilizes the wheel when you let go, and intelligent thermal management regulates torque based on real-time temperature.

Compatibility. MOZA lists Windows PC as the platform. Xbox play is possible with the MOZA ESX steering wheel; PlayStation is not supported. A steering wheel is not included.

Driving style

The R21 Ultra targets serious sim racers who want high sustained torque without paying flagship prices. Its 21 N·m flat-wire motor delivers strong, granular road detail in iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Le Mans Ultimate, Assetto Corsa and rFactor 2, and the extra headroom suits heavy GT3, GTP and endurance cars as well as large-diameter rims for drifting and trucks. Reviewers found it oscillates on banked sections until damping is raised, but once tuned it reads slides early and clearly. Best for competitive and endurance racers on a solid wheel deck or aluminum-profile rig who want to buy once; less suited for desk setups or newcomers to direct drive, who will be better served by the R12 V2 or R16 Ultra.

Build quality

Premium build

The R21 Ultra uses a CNC-machined aluminum alloy housing and coupler with a plastic rear cover, packed into a 248.8 × 140 × 135 mm, 9.0 kg body that is far more compact than the original R21. The zero-cogging flat-wire motor and 21-bit magnetic encoder are passively cooled with real-time thermal monitoring and no fan, and reviewers reported no overheating. A 360 W external adapter powers it, and MOZA offers up to 24 months of warranty.

Software

The R21 Ultra is set up in MOZA Pit House on Windows PC: force feedback strength, damping, friction and inertia, the effect equalizer and base FFB curve, one-click game presets, firmware updates and RGB strip telemetry. The MOZA mobile app can change settings mid-session. iRacing 360 Hz mode is supported. On Xbox it works when paired with the MOZA ESX steering wheel; PlayStation is not supported. SimHub and Crew Chief run alongside on PC.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MOZA R21 Ultra work on Xbox or PlayStation?

MOZA's official spec lists PC. Xbox play is possible when the base is paired with the MOZA ESX steering wheel, which handles console authentication. PlayStation is not supported.

Is the R21 Ultra's 21 Nm peak or sustained torque?

Sustained. MOZA's FAQ states the 21 N·m figure is continuous output rather than a short-term peak, and reviewers highlight this as a key difference from bases rated by peak torque.

How do I stop the R21 Ultra from oscillating?

Reviewers report oscillation on banked corners in Assetto Corsa and spiky FFB in iRacing with default settings, due to low natural damping. Increasing the damper in Pit House (around 20-30% in one review) and using the effect equalizer fixed it in testing.

MOZA R21 Ultra vs Simagic Alpha EVO Pro?

In a direct comparison at the same price, the reviewer found the Simagic smoother overall and the MOZA more granular but a bit rougher, while still preferring the MOZA overall for features and software. The extra torque was described as imperceptible to most sim racers.

Should I get the R21 Ultra or the R25 Ultra?

They share the same housing, flat-wire motor and 21-bit encoder. The R25 adds 4 Nm and a true torque sensor for $200 more. Reviewers call the R21 Ultra the safer bet for most buyers and an easy upgrade for existing MOZA owners.

Is the R21 Ultra good value?

At $699 it is roughly $33 per Nm of sustained torque, which reviewers cite as its main draw compared with other 20 Nm-class bases. Keep in mind that a rim, quick release and rigid rig are extra costs.

Does the R21 Ultra overheat in long sessions?

It has no fan; cooling is passive with intelligent thermal management that monitors temperature and regulates torque. Reviewers reported no overheating issues during testing.

What warranty does the R21 Ultra have?

MOZA's US store lists up to 24 months of warranty protection plus a 14-day returns policy for direct purchases.
