MOZA R16 Ultra

16 Nm direct drive base with flat-wire motor and CNC aluminum housing

Description

The MOZA R16 Ultra is a direct drive wheel base rated at 16 N·m of sustained torque. Launched on July 28, 2026 as the replacement for the R16 V2, it sits between the R12 V2 and the R21 Ultra in MOZA's range.

Motor and electronics. It uses a high-density flat-wire motor with ultra-low cogging, a 21-bit magnetic encoder (2,097,152 PPR) and a 600 MHz processor running MOZA's NexGen Force Feedback Algorithm U1. MOZA claims 12% higher torque density than similarly sized competitors.

Design and mounting. The CNC-machined aluminum housing measures 206 × 140 × 135 mm, noticeably more compact than the R16 V2, and supports bottom, front and side mounting. Two RGB light strips (16.7 million colors) can display telemetry such as ABS, traction control, gear shifts and flags.

Ecosystem and safety. Dedicated ports connect MOZA pedals, shifters, handbrakes, dashboards and an emergency stop switch without an extra USB hub. Hands-Off Protection detects when the driver lets go, suppresses oscillation and re-centers the wheel. Force feedback is tuned in MOZA Pit House or the mobile app.

Compatibility. Works on Windows PC. Xbox is supported only with the officially licensed MOZA ESX steering wheel; PlayStation is not supported. A steering wheel is not included.

Driving style

The R16 Ultra is aimed at experienced sim racers who want sustained high-torque direct drive without jumping to a flagship base. Its 16 N·m flat-wire motor with ultra-low cogging delivers strong, consistent detail in iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Le Mans Ultimate, the F1 series, Forza Motorsport and rally titles such as DiRT Rally 2.0 and EA SPORTS WRC, while the 21-bit magnetic encoder and 600 MHz CPU keep the signal clean and the latency low. Hands-Off Protection stops oscillation when you release the wheel, and the dual RGB strips can mirror telemetry or run any of 16.7 million colours. Best for dedicated PC racers in GT, formula and endurance competition; less suited for casual desk players who never use the full torque, and not for PlayStation, which is not officially supported.

Build quality

Premium build

The housing is CNC-machined aluminium, rigid under high-torque forces and compact at 206 × 140 × 135 mm. Inside, the build matches the price: a next-generation high-density flat-wire motor with 12% higher torque density than similarly sized competitors, a 21-bit magnetic encoder and a 600 MHz processor running the NexGen Force Feedback Algorithm U1, passively cooled with no fan. Fit and finish are clean, mounting options are generous for a base this size, and MOZA backs the main body with up to 24 months of warranty coverage.

Software

The R16 Ultra runs entirely through MOZA Pit House on Windows PC, where you adjust force feedback strength, response, friction and damping, update firmware, and configure the dual RGB light strips or display real-time telemetry on them. Some titles need an initial profile set in Pit House before they pick the wheel up correctly. On Xbox it works when paired with the officially licensed MOZA ESX Steering Wheel, while PlayStation is not officially supported. Third-party tools such as Crew Chief can overlay race information on top of the sim, and firmware updates are delivered through Pit House.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MOZA R16 Ultra work on PlayStation or Xbox?

MOZA lists Windows PC as the main platform. Xbox is supported only when the base is used with the officially licensed MOZA ESX steering wheel; the base alone does not provide Xbox compatibility. PlayStation is not officially supported.

Can I mount the R16 Ultra on a desk clamp?

MOZA lists bottom, front and side mounting for the 206 × 140 × 135 mm housing and advises checking that the rig can handle 16 Nm. Reviewers recommend a dedicated wheel deck or rigid aluminum profile cockpit rather than a desk clamp, because flex and slippage become a problem at this torque level.

Is the 16 Nm figure sustained or peak torque?

MOZA's FAQ describes 16 Nm as sustained output, while the spec table labels it "Maximum Torque" and no separate peak figure is published. Some reviewers have pointed out this inconsistent labeling. MOZA also ran a beta test of a software update targeting 18 Nm, which is not part of the standard specification.

Is 16 Nm too strong, and how does the force feedback feel?

Full output is not required: strength, response, friction and damping are adjustable in MOZA Pit House, and Hands-Off Protection re-centers the wheel when released. Early reviewers describe the motor as very smooth with no perceptible cogging; one added a little friction because the wheel felt light, and another runs about 60% in-game gain. Reviewers also warn that strong impacts can be hard to hold, so tune gradually.

Does the R16 Ultra overheat during long sessions?

In one month-long early review, the aluminum housing became noticeably warm after long summer sessions, but the reviewer saw no torque reduction with the conservative thermal setting. This is a single test rather than a lab measurement, and longer-term reliability data is not yet available for a base launched in mid-2026.

How is the R16 Ultra different from the R16 V2?

Both are rated at 16 Nm with a 21-bit encoder. The Ultra adds a flat-wire low-cogging motor, a 600 MHz processor, the NexGen FFB Algorithm U1, dual RGB strips, a more compact body and more mounting options. Reviewers note the change is mostly motor design and packaging rather than more torque, so R16 V2 owners may get more from upgrading other parts of the rig.

Should I choose the R16 Ultra, the R12 V2 or the R21 Ultra?

At US launch pricing the R12 V2 is $399 (12 Nm), the R16 Ultra $529 (16 Nm) and the R21 Ultra $699 (21 Nm). Reviewers see the R16 Ultra as the value step in MOZA's range for drivers upgrading from an R5-class base; R12 owners with moderate force needs may not need it, while the R21 Ultra adds torque headroom at a higher price.

What warranty does the MOZA R16 Ultra have?

MOZA's US store lists a warranty of up to 24 months and a 14-day returns policy. Terms can differ by region and retailer, so check the store you buy from.

What is included in the box, and what else do I need?

The box contains the wheel base, power adapter, power cord, data cord and bolt kit. There is no steering wheel, pedals or wheel-side quick release, so budget for a MOZA-compatible rim (MOZA suggests its KS Pro or CS Pro at $329 each) and a rigid cockpit.

How is the R16 Ultra configured, and do the RGB telemetry lights work in every game?

Force feedback, lighting and other settings are configured in MOZA Pit House on PC, with mobile app support. MOZA says some games need extra setup in Pit House. In early testing, RGB telemetry was inconsistent in some titles and Le Mans Ultimate needed extra configuration, which the reviewer linked to beta software; iRacing at 360 Hz was the best pairing.
