Driving style

The TM Open Wheel suits GT, prototype and kart racing in iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Gran Turismo and Forza, where its compact 28 cm size and light weight make quick corrections easy. The Checkered Flag praised its feel and recommended it especially for console users with T-Series bases.

Best for drivers who want a light, versatile, affordable rim on a T-Series base; less suited for PC sims that need many buttons, unless you add a button box.

Build quality

Mid-range build

A brushed aluminum faceplate, suede grips and 100% metal paddles keep the rim at 864 g. The Checkered Flag called it the lightest wheel Thrustmaster had produced at the time and praised the tactile clicks of its buttons and paddles.

Software

No separate app is needed: it is configured through the base's Thrustmaster drivers on PC and works plug-and-play on PlayStation and Xbox. The Checkered Flag warned that outdated drivers or firmware can make the paddles behave unexpectedly, so update first.

Frequently asked questions

Which bases is the TM Open Wheel compatible with?

Thrustmaster lists the T500 RS, T300 RS family, T300 Ferrari variants, TX family, TS-XW Racer, TS-PC Racer and T-GT. On the T818 it needs the Quick Release Adapter, one of which comes with the T818.

How light is it, and does it help force feedback?

It weighs 864 g. The Checkered Flag called it the lightest wheel Thrustmaster had produced and said the low weight helps communicate force feedback.

Does it have enough buttons for PC sims?

It has 6 action buttons, a D-pad and a 3-position rotary switch. The Checkered Flag noted this is fewer than some rivals, which can be limiting on PC without a button box or keyboard.

Are the paddles metal?

Yes, 100% metal sequential paddles, 7.5 cm tall and mounted on the wheel. The Checkered Flag enjoyed their distinct clicks but noted they are one-directional rather than rocker-style.

Any setup problems to watch for?

The Checkered Flag found setup can be tricky without current drivers and firmware, since outdated software can make the paddles behave unexpectedly. Update the base firmware before first use.

TM Open Wheel vs TM Leather 28 GT: which should I choose?

Both are 28 cm rims for T-Series bases. The Open Wheel has suede grips, an aluminum faceplate and weighs 864 g; the Leather 28 GT has a hand-stitched leather rim and weighs 1 kg. Button layouts are similar, with 6 buttons, a D-pad and a rotary switch.

Is it good value?

When verified it was $179.99 on Thrustmaster's US eShop and $191.18 sold by Amazon.com. The Checkered Flag called it an excellent addition to the range, though not a cheap purchase.
