Driving style

The 488 GT3 wheel is built for GT3 and endurance racing in Assetto Corsa Competizione, iRacing, Le Mans Ultimate and Gran Turismo 7, where its encoders handle TC, ABS and brake bias on the fly. TechRadar praised its force feedback and authentic build but found the paddles noisy and the many controls daunting for newcomers.

Best for GT3 and endurance drivers on any Thrustmaster base; less suited for beginners who want a simpler wheel, and for rally or drift.

Build quality

Mid-range build

The 488 GT3 has a carbon fiber-clad faceplate, rubber grips and magnetic paddles at 1,140 g. TechRadar called the build luxurious and authentic, with durable, comfortable grips, though the paddles feel heavy and clunky at first.

Software

The wheel is configured through the base's Thrustmaster drivers on Windows, or My Thrustmaster Panel on the T818 and T598, with no separate app. It works plug-and-play on PlayStation and Xbox through a compatible Thrustmaster base, and the LED mode (GT or single-seater) is set on the wheel.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 488 GT3 wheel work on the T818 and T598 without an adapter?

Yes. It comes with two Quick Release holders, one for screw-type bases and one for latch-type bases, so Thrustmaster says it is natively compatible with all its wheel bases, from T300 and TX to T818 and T598.

Does it work on PlayStation and Xbox?

Yes, through a compatible Thrustmaster base. TechRadar notes it supports PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and last-gen consoles, but a compatible wheelbase is required, and the reviewer tested it on the PC-only T818.

How do the paddles feel?

The paddles use magnetic sensors and can be set in 4 positions. TechRadar found them heavy, clunky and noisy at first, but responsive, with shifting becoming natural after some adjustment.

Is the 488 GT3 wheel good for beginners?

TechRadar called it feature-rich and high quality but warned that its many buttons and options may overwhelm newcomers. It suits drivers who want GT3-style controls for pit calls, radio and car settings.

What do the LEDs show?

Four LEDs above the logo show information such as RPM and pit window opening, with GT and single-seater modes. TechRadar found them optional but useful for alerts like low fuel or pit entry.

488 GT3 vs Hypercar Wheel Add-On: which is better for GT racing?

The 488 GT3 is a round-style GT3 replica that fits every Thrustmaster base and costs $279.99. The Hypercar Wheel Add-On has an oval rim, leather and Alcantara grips, 25 buttons and analog clutch triggers, but only fits the T818 and T598 and costs $399.99.

How durable is the build?

It has carbon fiber cladding on the faceplate and rubber grips, at 1,140 g. TechRadar described the build as luxurious and authentic, with grips that feel durable and comfortable.

How much does it cost?

TechRadar reviewed it at $249.99. When verified, Thrustmaster's US eShop listed it at $279.99.

Are there known firmware issues?

Thrustmaster's support knowledge base covers add-ons such as the 488 GT3 disconnecting or losing force feedback after base firmware 2.04, with a fix described there. Keep the base and add-on firmware up to date.
