Fanatec QR2 Base-Side (Type-M)

Billet-aluminum QR2 upgrade for Podium DD1, DD2 and Podium Racing Wheel F1 bases

Description

The Fanatec QR2 Base-Side (Type-M) is designed to upgrade Podium wheel bases to QR2: the Podium DD1, Podium DD2 and Podium Racing Wheel F1.

Construction. CNC-machined from a single block of aviation-grade billet aluminum, with the tapered shape milled using 5-axis CNC, and a precision 30 µm nickel coating for durability and easy wheel removal.

How it works. Push-on attachment and hot-swap between wheels without restarting the sim or base.

Requirement. Wheels need a QR2, QR2 Pro or QR2 Lite Wheel-Side; QR1 wheels do not fit. Installation involves reconnecting the base's internal wires.

Driving style

The QR2 Base-Side (Type-M) is for owners of Podium DD1, DD2 or the Podium Racing Wheel F1 who want QR2 on their high-torque base. With up to 20-25 Nm of torque on these bases, a rigid quick release matters most, and Simufy recommends QR2 especially for medium- and high-torque direct drive users. It suits serious iRacing, ACC and Le Mans Ultimate drivers who swap between GT, formula and endurance wheels.

Best for Podium base owners with several QR2 wheels; less suited for drivers keeping QR1 wheels or who are uncomfortable with internal wiring during installation.

Premium build

CNC-machined from a single block of aviation-grade billet aluminum with a 5-axis milled cone and 30 µm nickel coating. It is the premium QR2 base-side, matching Fanatec's top bases.

Software

The QR2 Base-Side needs no setup of its own. The Podium base is still managed through the Fanatec App on Windows PC for firmware and settings, with console support depending on the base.

Frequently asked questions

Which bases does the QR2 Base-Side Type-M fit?

Podium Wheel Base DD1, Podium Wheel Base DD2 and the Podium Racing Wheel F1. CSL DD and Gran Turismo DD Pro use the Type-C instead.

How difficult is the Type-M installation?

Overtake.gg reports it takes extra steps because the base's wires must be reconnected, unlike the simpler Type-C. The reviewer upgraded a DD2 and two wheels in about 30 minutes.

Will my QR1 wheels work after upgrading a Podium base to QR2?

No. QR1 and QR2 are not compatible, so each wheel needs a QR2, QR2 Pro or QR2 Lite Wheel-Side.

Is QR2 worth it on a Podium DD1 or DD2?

Simufy recommends QR2 mostly for medium- and high-torque direct drive users and frequent wheel swappers, which fits Podium owners. Overtake.gg found QR2 removes QR1 flex and adds slight detail on small effects.

Type-M vs Type-C: which do I need?

It depends on the base, not preference: Type-M for Podium bases, Type-C for CSL DD and GT DD Pro. The Type-M is billet aluminum with nickel coating; the Type-C is diecast with an anodized surface.

How much does the Type-M cost?

$99.99 in the US and €89.95 in the EU, down from €149.95 when Overtake.gg reviewed it.

Does it need software?

No. The base continues to use the Fanatec App on PC for firmware and settings.
