Thrustmaster T818 Black Edition

10 Nm constant-torque direct drive base for PC with RGB telemetry LEDs

Description

The Thrustmaster T818 Black Edition is the black-plated version of Thrustmaster's T818 direct drive base. It delivers 10 Nm of constant torque with no saturation from a custom-designed motor, powered by an included 168 W power supply. Reviewers have measured short peaks of about 12-13 Nm.

Quick release and ecosystem. The base uses a quick release made of an aeronautics-grade composite that changes rims in about 5 seconds. One Quick Release Adapter kit is included so older Thrustmaster rims can be fitted.

Telemetry LEDs and software. A hexagon of customizable RGB LEDs on the front reacts to RPM, flag and pit information. My Thrustmaster Panel on Windows 10/11 provides 10 force feedback settings, extra effects, LED configuration and saved profiles.

Mounting. Four mounting points under the base for cockpits (192 × 224 × 180 mm, 5 kg). The Cockpit Mounting Kit and Desk Mounting Kit are sold separately.

Driving style

With 10 Nm of constant torque and short peaks above that, the T818 Black Edition has enough strength for GT, endurance and formula driving in iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Le Mans Ultimate, F1 and Assetto Corsa, and reviewers say it conveys grip and track bumps well once tuned. Reviewers report some play in the quick release adapter, which matters most for rally, and the base is best on a rigid cockpit rather than a desk. Best for PC racers already invested in Thrustmaster rims and pedals who want a direct drive upgrade; less suited for console players or newcomers, who may find the Fanatec CSL DD or MOZA R9 simpler to set up.

Build quality

Mid-range build

The T818 Black Edition pairs a custom direct drive motor with black metal side plates, a 168 W power supply and four mounting points underneath (192 × 224 × 180 mm, 5 kg). The quick release is an aeronautics-grade composite and reinforced connectors are used for reliability. Reviewers praise long-term durability and consistent output, but note visible plastic in the air intakes, LED surround and quick release adapter compared with all-metal rivals.

Software

The T818 Black Edition is configured in My Thrustmaster Panel on Windows 10/11: 10 force feedback settings, extra effects, LED color and behavior, rotation and saved profiles, plus firmware updates. Strength modes above Comfort must be unlocked in the panel. Early firmware caused strong oscillation at low speed, which reviewers say later updates largely fixed, and Thrustmaster publishes baseline FFB settings for popular sims. There is no console support. SimHub and Crew Chief run alongside on PC.

Frequently asked questions

Does the T818 Black Edition work on PlayStation or Xbox?

No. Thrustmaster lists the T818 Black Edition as compatible with PC (Windows 10/11) only, and reviewers confirm there is no console support.

Can I mount the T818 on my cockpit or desk?

The base has four mounting points underneath, but reviewers found its hexagonal layout does not line up with many cockpit wheel decks. Thrustmaster's Cockpit Mounting Kit or Desk Mounting Kit (sold separately) solves this; PC Perspective advises against desk use because the desk may shake at higher strength.

Do my older Thrustmaster rims work with the T818?

Yes, with an adapter. The new quick release is not compatible with the old one, so older rims need the screw-on Quick Release Adapter; one is included in the box and additional ones are sold separately. Reviewers say the adapter can add a little play and flex.

How strong is the T818 Black Edition?

Thrustmaster rates it at 10 Nm of constant torque with no saturation. PC Perspective measured short peaks of about 12-13 Nm. Higher strength modes have to be unlocked in My Thrustmaster Panel.

Does the T818 overheat or fade in long sessions?

PC Perspective reported the casing only gets slightly warm, the fan was never audible and force feedback stayed consistent over long sessions and about two years of use. Early firmware caused low-speed oscillation, which later updates made much more manageable.

T818 vs Fanatec CSL DD or MOZA R9: which is better?

The T818 offers more constant torque for the price, but RacingGames found the CSL DD and MOZA R9 easier to set up and better for beginners. Reviewers mainly recommend the T818 to drivers who already own Thrustmaster rims and pedals.

Is the T818 Black Edition good value at $649.99?

The price per Nm is competitive, but the base ships without a rim or pedals, and mounting kits and extra QR adapters cost extra. Reviewers consider it good value mostly for existing Thrustmaster owners.

What can I adjust in the T818 software?

My Thrustmaster Panel offers 10 FFB settings, extra effects, LED configuration and saved profiles, plus four strength modes (Comfort, Sport, Performance, Extreme). RacingGames found it less tweakable than some rival suites.
