Thrustmaster T598 Servo Base

5 Nm Direct Axial Drive base with Race Dash screen for PS5, PS4 and PC

Description

The Thrustmaster T598 Servo Base is the standalone version of the base from the T598 bundle. It uses Thrustmaster's Direct Axial Drive: an axial flux motor with zero cogging, rated at 5 Nm of constant torque with an overshoot capability of +100% for short peaks such as curbs and impacts.

Force feedback and electronics. HARMONY high-frequency torque technology and a stated 5 ms latency. A Race Dash screen built into the base shows more than 10 race data items and lets you change more than 10 settings without a PC.

Platforms and ecosystem. Officially compatible with PS5, PS4 and PC (Windows 10/11), plug and play in more than 100 games. It accepts Thrustmaster wheel add-ons, pedal sets, shifters and handbrakes; some older rims need the Quick Release Adapter or Quick Release Upgrade (sold separately).

Mounting. Four attachment points under the base for cockpits; the Desk Mounting Kit is sold separately. It is powered by an external 98 W power supply and weighs 4.7 kg.

Driving style

The T598 base is aimed at PlayStation racers who want to move from belt or gear wheels to direct drive. Its 5 Nm constant torque with short overshoot peaks gives sharp curb and impact detail in Gran Turismo 7, F1 and Assetto Corsa Competizione, and reviewers praise the smooth, cogging-free steering in Le Mans Ultimate and iRacing on PC. Midrange detail and sustained weight are less pronounced than on stronger bases, and long sessions can bring some heat-related fade. Best for PS5 and PS5 + PC drivers on a budget using formula or GT rims; less suited for PC-only racers, who have more mature options such as the MOZA R5, or for heavy GT and drift rims that need more sustained torque.

Build quality

Mid-range build

The T598 base uses an axial flux motor in a large housing (about 400 × 220 × 200 mm, 4.7 kg) with four mounting points underneath and an external 98 W power supply. The integrated Race Dash screen is a useful addition at this price. Reviewers note that the base is tall, uses a non-standard bolt pattern and that the quick release and desk clamp rely on plastic parts, which feels less premium than metal competitors.

Software

On Windows PC the T598 base uses My Thrustmaster Panel for settings, tests and firmware updates (some functions require an internet connection); at launch reviewers found the panel incomplete and the update process awkward. Most settings can also be changed directly on the Race Dash screen of the base, which is how the base is tuned on PS5 and PS4, where it is plug and play. In Gran Turismo 7 the base was still recognized as a T-GT II at review time. On PC, SimHub and Crew Chief run alongside as usual.

Frequently asked questions

Does the T598 Servo Base work on Xbox?

No. This T598 Servo Base is the PlayStation / PC version and is officially compatible with PS5, PS4 and PC only. Thrustmaster sells a separate T598 Xbox / PC version as a bundle; the PlayStation base does not work on Xbox.

Can I use my older Thrustmaster wheel rims on the T598 base?

Yes, the base works with Thrustmaster wheel add-ons, but older rims use the previous quick release. Thrustmaster sells a Quick Release Adapter and a screw-on Quick Release Upgrade for them, and its compatibility list notes that some rims need an adapter. Reviewers say the SF1000 worked only with the adapter at launch.

How strong is the T598 base: 5 Nm or 10 Nm?

Thrustmaster rates it at 5 Nm of constant torque with a +100% overshoot capability, so short effects such as curbs can approach 10 Nm. Sustained cornering force stays around the 5 Nm rating. OverTake's reviewer said the brief peaks sometimes made it feel closer to an 8 Nm base in iRacing.

Is the T598 base noisy or does it overheat?

Reviews from OverTake and DG Edge both report a low-frequency hum or chirp from the motor under load that is noticeable without headphones; Thrustmaster said retail units and firmware updates reduce it. DG Edge measured about 45°C in a 20°C room and saw force feedback drop in longer sessions, and suggested running around 50% FFB for consistency.

T598 vs Fanatec GT DD Pro or MOZA R5: which should I pick?

On PS5, the T598 is the cheaper direct drive option; reviewers found the Fanatec GT DD Pro smoother and quieter but more expensive. On PC only, HOTLAP recommends the MOZA R5 (5.5 Nm) for its more mature software and standard bolt pattern, since the R5 does not run natively on PS5.

Is the T598 Servo Base worth $499?

Reviewers generally call it a strong-value entry to direct drive for PlayStation players, while scoring it moderately (OverTake 3.25/5, DG Edge 6.8/10) because of noise, heat fade and unfinished software at launch. It makes the most sense if you already own Thrustmaster rims and pedals and race on PS5.

What software does the T598 base use?

On PC it uses My Thrustmaster Panel for settings, tests and firmware updates. Reviewers at launch found the panel incomplete and firmware updates cumbersome. Most settings can also be adjusted on the base's Race Dash screen, which is how you tune it on PlayStation.
